The key indicator of brand equity is whether Deye-branded sales outpace white-label volumes without disrupting core distributor partnerships.

What the three tests add up to

The 2023–2024 period served as an informative operational test for Deye. The company navigated a regulatory compliance crisis, an inventory destocking cycle in a core market, and channel conflict over regional distribution rights. Management responded by funding product retrofits, reallocating sales capacity to alternative international markets, and maintaining shipment velocity. Consequently, full-year 2024 revenue rose 49.82% to RMB 11.21 billion, while net profit increased 65.29% to RMB 2.96 billion, achieving a complete financial recovery within four quarters of the cyclical trough.1124

This recovery demonstrates substantial operational resilience and commercial agility. However, it also indicates that underlying geographic and market volatility remains a structural feature of Deye's business model, requiring ongoing reallocation into new high-growth regions.

Looking strictly at Deye's 2025 headline performance, the company appeared to have transitioned into a lower-growth industrial phase. Annual revenue rose 9.08% to RMB 12.22 billion, while net profit grew 7.11% to RMB 3.17 billion, yielding earnings per share of RMB 3.51.125 Following the sharp expansion of prior years, these top-line metrics suggested a marked deceleration.

In practice, however, the underlying business was undergoing a structural shift beneath the stable top-line figures.

The mix shift that mattered

Deye's combined inverter franchise—encompassing string, micro, and energy storage units—generated RMB 6.32 billion in 2025, a 13.78% increase year over year. Within that total, storage inverters accounted for RMB 5.22 billion, up 18.9%.1 Unit volumes illustrate where the financial value concentrated: Deye shipped 771,500 storage inverters, 634,000 string inverters, and 228,200 microinverters.1 While storage inverters represented less than half of total units shipped, they generated over 80% of segment revenue—reflecting higher average selling prices driven by complex hybrid inverter architectures rather than standardized string components.

The primary growth catalyst emerged in energy storage batteries. Battery pack gross margin compressed from 33.7% in 2023 to 31.1% in early 2026 under pressure from raw lithium carbonate pricing.14 Because Deye procures battery cells externally rather than manufacturing them, its battery division operates primarily as a system integrator and distributor, capturing margin on assembly and channel distribution rather than cell chemistry. Concurrently, Deye's legacy appliance operations continued to contract. This renewed momentum reflects a shift in geographic demand, driven primarily by European market expansion.

Geographic data disclosed in Deye's Hong Kong listing prospectus highlights this structural realignment. Overseas sales expanded from 58.0% of total revenue in 2023 to 70.9% in 2024, 79.7% in 2025, and 87.6% across the first four months of 2026.2 Within group revenue for early 2026, Europe became the dominant market at 45.3% (RMB 2.798 billion), outpacing non-mainland Asia at RMB 1.551 billion and Africa at RMB 577 million.223 North America represented 4.7% of total revenue.2

The working-capital question

Rapid commercial expansion across international distribution channels has also reshaped Deye's balance sheet structure.

Total assets expanded 31.71% in 2025 to RMB 19.91 billion, while shareholders' equity grew 9.06% to RMB 10.31 billion, indicating that asset growth was funded largely through increased liabilities.1 Accounts receivable grew from RMB 570 million at year-end 2023 to RMB 2.04 billion by late April 2026—a 257% increase—extending receivable turnover from 30 days to 39 days.26 Over the same period, inventory increased from RMB 750 million to RMB 3.08 billion, pushing inventory turnover from 68 days to 80 days.26 Standard commercial credit terms range between 60 and 90 days.14

While absolute working-capital metrics remain within typical industrial ranges, credit extensions to distributors operating under foreign exchange controls and macroeconomic volatility introduce financial exposure. On October 2, 2024, the company broke ground on a US$150 million manufacturing facility spanning 33 acres in EcoWorld Business Park II within the Singapore-Johor economic zone in Malaysia, dedicated to inverter and battery storage assembly.3031 Domestically, Deye Energy Storage committed to constructing a 16-gigawatt-hour commercial and industrial storage production line in Cixi, Ningbo, structured in two phases: an initial 7-gigawatt-hour phase requiring at least RMB 895 million in fixed assets, followed by a 9-gigawatt-hour phase with a minimum investment of RMB 1.232 billion.32 Disclosures indicate the group operates four manufacturing facilities in Zhejiang, with two domestic expansions and the Malaysia project under construction.14

The Malaysian project serves a strategic objective outlined in listing filings: mitigating trade and tariff risks in European and North American markets through geographic manufacturing diversification.2 However, localized hardware assembly may not fully resolve regulatory scrutiny in jurisdictions where policy discussions focus increasingly on cloud platform control, firmware updates, and cybersecurity standards for connected energy equipment.

The dark horse, held at arm's length

Recent market discussions in 2026 have also associated Deye with 800-volt solid-state transformers for artificial intelligence data center power systems, a research area referenced in an August 2026 corporate profile.8 While solid-state power conversion aligns technically with Deye's power electronics engineering, commercial adoption of 800-volt high-voltage DC architectures in hyperscaler data centers remains in development.

Deye has reported no commercial revenue from data center power equipment to date. Entering hyperscaler supply chains requires multi-year qualification cycles and strict compliance validation, contrasting with the flexible consumer and commercial markets where Deye established its core market share. Regulatory disclosures currently place data center applications in early technical exploration rather than commercial deployment.

To fund capital investments and international expansion, Deye announced plans on November 13, 2025, to issue H shares and pursue a dual listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.3334 The company submitted its initial application to the HKEX main board on January 27, 2026, sponsored jointly by 中金公司 CICC, 中信证券 CITIC Securities, and 招银国际 CMB International.35 Following the expiration of the standard six-month review window on July 27, Deye submitted a renewed prospectus on July 28, 2026.23 According to filings, intended offering proceeds are designated for energy storage inverter research and development, commercial storage system scale-up, manufacturing capacity expansion in Ningbo and Malaysia, and the growth of global sales and technical service networks.223

Directing capital toward proprietary service networks reflects an effort to build direct technical support and channel relationships, addressing the company's historical reliance on third-party master distributors highlighted during previous channel disruptions. Expanding local service infrastructure represents a multi-year effort to strengthen brand equity and channel stability across key international markets.

VIII. Management, Governance, & Capital Allocation

A 2007 profile of Zhang Hejun captures his operating style far better than an organizational chart. It described a chairman who, despite running an enterprise with a billion yuan in annual sales, spent his time on the factory floor troubleshooting production lines and facility maintenance rather than sitting behind an executive desk.8 Nearly two decades later, at age 74, he remains executive chairman of a group whose sales have expanded roughly twelvefold.8

Ownership and succession

The Zhang family controls approximately 60.26% of Deye's voting rights, held directly and through holding vehicles including 艾思睿投资 Airui Investment, 亨丽创业投资 Hengli, and 德派创业投资 Depai, alongside equity held by Zhang's wife 陆亚珠 Lu Yazhu.814 Hurun estimated Zhang's personal net worth at RMB 45.5 billion in 2026.8

Executive succession is already well underway within the family. Zhang stepped down as general manager in 2022, handing operational control to his second son, 张栋业 Zhang Dongye (born 1981), who also assumed the role of legal representative in August 2024. His elder son, 张栋斌 Zhang Dongbin (born 1978), serves as an executive director. Both sons hold Canadian citizenship.8

This governance structure presents three strategic implications:

First, economic alignment is substantial. Controlling 60% of the voting power and holding a dominant equity stake incentivizes long-term planning over short-term earnings harvesting. The 2016 pivot into solar inverters—initiated when Zhang was 64—reflects a founder willing to commit capital to high-growth opportunities rather than managing for passive income.

Second, absolute family control limits external corporate governance checks. Minority investors, activist funds, or independent directors cannot override decisions made by the controlling family. For a group utilizing multiple related-party holding entities, this concentration of power places a heavy burden on independent board oversight and financial reporting transparency as Deye expands its international footprint and pursues a Hong Kong listing.

Third, the Canadian citizenship of the operating heirs is a notable contextual detail. While common among founders of major Chinese manufacturing enterprises, this international status is relevant for a company operating in Western export markets where energy hardware suppliers face growing regulatory scrutiny regarding state ties and national security.

The capital allocation record, tested

A favorable summary of Deye's capital allocation emphasizes disciplined organic growth, low M&A activity, strong dividend payouts, and a net cash balance sheet. While most of that narrative holds up under scrutiny, its equity management record reveals clear strategic missteps.

Equity issuance. Deye did not refrain from accessing capital markets after its initial public offering. In October 2022—near the peak of its equity valuation—the company announced a private placement to raise up to RMB 3.55 billion. The capital was allocated to a 25.5-gigawatt string and storage inverter production line (RMB 1.998 billion), a 3-gigawatt microinverter line (RMB 542 million), an R&D facility (RMB 510 million), and general working capital (RMB 500 million).36 The offering was ultimately downsized, issuing roughly 36 million shares (35,997,120) at RMB 55.56 to raise RMB 2.00 billion gross and RMB 1.992 billion net, with proceeds fully received in June 2024.6

Project termination. At a shareholder meeting on November 14, 2025, Deye voted to cancel the 25.5-gigawatt inverter line—the primary allocation of the placement funds—and redirect the capital toward a 7-gigawatt-hour commercial and industrial storage line. Mergers and acquisitions. Deye's M&A record reflects strict transaction discipline. Over three decades of operations, its only major strategic acquisition was the 2016 acqui-hire of Ningbo Rixin Technology. The company has avoided debt-funded empire building and large goodwill write-offs, focusing capital deployment on internal manufacturing infrastructure rather than acquiring top-line revenue.

Management credibility

A key test of management credibility is how executives communicate during operational setbacks. Deye's record demonstrates reasonable transparency alongside notable disclosure gaps. Following the Relay-Gate controversy, management hosted an investor conference call within 48 hours, acknowledged compliance oversights, and detailed the unit costs of the missing components rather than deflecting responsibility.17 During the South African market correction, management cited specific operational drivers—including improved Eskom grid stability, heightened peer competition, and channel inventory accumulation—and outlined targeted geographic expansion plans across South Asia and Latin America.2021 Similarly, corporate filings explicitly detailed the market shifts that led to the 2025 project cancellation.6

Step one: own the physical layer. Build the molds, stamp the metal, braze the coils. This makes the cost floor structural rather than negotiated.

Step two: find an adjacency where an existing capability is 60% of the answer. Variable-frequency air-conditioner control was most of a solar inverter. Deye did not invent a category; it recognized that it was already halfway across a bridge someone else had built.

Step three: buy the missing 40% cheaply. The Rixin acqui-hire cost a fraction of what a Western inverter platform would have.

Step four: aim at the customer the incumbents have decided is beneath them. Low-voltage batteries and generator ports were, to a European product manager in 2018, a downmarket distraction.

Step five: rent distribution rather than build it. Master distributors and white-label partners bought Deye five years of market entry it could not have financed on its own.

Step six — and this is the one currently in progress — try to buy the distribution back once the volume exists to fund it.

Myth versus reality

Three consensus narratives about Deye deserve correction, because each is directionally right and materially misleading.

Myth: Deye is an emerging-market off-grid company. Reality: it was. In the first four months of 2026, Europe generated 45.3% of group revenue—more than triple Africa's contribution, while Africa's absolute revenue remained smaller than most market narratives assumed.223 The company that built its reputation in Johannesburg now earns most of its income in a region with functioning electrical grids, feed-in economics, and regulators actively drafting stricter rules for its product category. Myth: Deye is an inverter company. Reality: it is becoming a battery integrator that also manufactures inverters. Storage battery packs overtook inverters as the company's single largest revenue line in early 2026, even though battery gross margins sit roughly twenty percentage points below storage inverter margins.14 The consolidated gross margin trajectory over the next three years depends heavily on product mix, which is shifting toward lower-margin storage packs.

Myth: Deye's high margins reflect proprietary technology. Reality: they substantially reflect where and how the company sells. Chinese manufacturers supply approximately 80% of global solar inverters, and major competitors are expanding storage-inverter manufacturing capacity simultaneously.39 Industry analysis of the 2025 reporting cycle highlighted that concentrated capacity additions by Sungrow and Ginlong into residential and commercial storage could compress Deye's 51.10% storage inverter margin if market demand slows.7

Buyer power — high, with shifting composition. Deye's top five customers generated RMB 3.904 billion in 2025, representing 31.9% of group revenue, with the largest distributor accounting for 14.3%.14 Customer concentration in a distributor-heavy channel model leaves quarterly results sensitive to order shifts among key partners. Threat of substitutes — low to moderate, varying by geographic infrastructure. In developed markets, grid stability and utility tariffs function as alternative solutions to storage hardware. In regions facing chronic load-shedding, standalone solar-plus-storage has few direct functional substitutes. Consequently, the primary substitution risk stems from utility infrastructure upgrades rather than competing technologies, as demonstrated when Eskom grid stabilization reduced backup power demand in South Africa.

New entrants — high in product manufacturing, moderate in channel infrastructure. Replicating a hybrid inverter power topology requires standard electrical engineering capabilities. However, establishing installer networks, warranty logistics, local spare-parts distribution, and service infrastructure across more than 150 countries presents a higher operational barrier, representing Deye's principal channel defense.23

The competitive framework indicates rising pressure across four of five forces, confirming that Deye's core defensibility relies on manufacturing cost efficiency rather than structural customer lock-in.

X. Bull vs. Bear Case & The 3 Critical KPIs

The bull case

The bundle is working, and the arithmetic is compelling. Deye has demonstrated that it can attach a battery pack to a hybrid inverter sale at scale, taking battery revenue from a standing start in 2022 to the group's largest line in under four years.148 Every incremental attach roughly doubles revenue per installation without requiring a new customer, a new distributor, or a new market. Even at compressed margins, the incremental contribution on a captive attach is high because the customer acquisition cost was already spent on the inverter.

Commercial and industrial storage is a genuine second act, and it is funded. The redirection of listing proceeds into the Cixi C&I line — 7GWh in phase one — targets a segment where Deye already ranks second globally at 20.4% share.232 C&I customers buy larger systems, on longer procurement cycles, with stickier service relationships than residential installers. If Deye converts a residential brand into a commercial one, the revenue quality improves materially. The caution attached to that: this is the same capital that was originally raised for a project management subsequently abandoned, so the conversion is a plan, not a track record.6

The current cycle is exceptionally strong and broad-based. The 2026 acceleration is not a single-country phenomenon in the way 2022 was. Effective from mid-2026, the European Commission moved to phase Chinese-made inverters out of EU-funded energy projects, citing economic and cybersecurity risk, with restrictions spanning EU instruments including the European Investment Bank and the EBRD; the timeline runs from a July 2026 review of ongoing activity, through an assessment of advanced-stage projects from November 2026, to full incorporation into new contracts by April 2027.39 Suppliers from Japan, South Korea, Switzerland and the United States remain eligible.39 The United States has separately been reported to be drafting restrictions on Chinese solar inverters on grid-security grounds.40 Deye's direct North American exposure is small at 4.7% of revenue, but Europe at 45.3% is not.2 The mechanism matters: the concern is remote firmware access, which a Malaysian assembly line does not address, and Deye's own November 2024 remote shutdown is the most vivid available exhibit for the policy's proponents.

Margin decay is already measurable. Overseas gross margin has fallen nearly eight points since 2023 and battery pack margin has compressed, both while volumes boomed.714 The bear reading is that the current record group margin reflects a demand spike rather than a structural improvement, and that as the spike normalises the underlying downtrend reasserts itself. There is nothing in Deye's history that contradicts this; the 2023–24 sequence showed how quickly a 50%-margin market becomes a normal one.

Working-capital and credit risk in fragile currencies. Receivables, inventory and their respective turnover days have all deteriorated during the boom, foreign exchange losses have appeared, and an unusually large share of collections arrives via third-party payers.26 In a downturn, this combination converts an earnings problem into a cash problem.

Concentration on both sides. Roughly a third of revenue from five customers, roughly a third of procurement from five suppliers, and near-total dependence on a single end-market theme.14 Diversification of geography has improved dramatically; diversification of counterparty has not.

Compliance tail risk. The company disclosed that in 2022 it sold and delivered inverters to two customers located in Syria, in US dollar-denominated transactions totalling roughly US$230,000 across four wire transfers; it engaged international sanctions counsel, made a voluntary self-disclosure to the US Office of Foreign Assets Control, and quantified a potential penalty of US$755,000.2614 The financial magnitude is immaterial. The signal is not: a company selling grid-connected hardware into 150 countries through intermediaries has limited visibility into ultimate destination, and it is being reviewed for exactly that at the same moment Western regulators are deciding how much to trust it. Self-disclosure is the right behaviour and it should be credited; the underlying control gap is what a skeptic would probe.

The activist's question. If a hostile analyst were to write the short thesis, it would not lead on any of the above individually. It would lead on the combination: a business whose record margin, record growth and listing attempt are all arriving simultaneously, whose largest market is legislating against its product category, whose receivables are lengthening in soft currencies, whose balance sheet expanded on liabilities rather than earnings in 2025, and whose controlling family holds sixty percent of the votes and therefore faces no internal check on how it responds.11426

The three KPIs that matter

Everything above reduces to three things worth tracking, in order.

1. The geographic dispersion of overseas revenue — specifically Europe's share, and whether any single country is rising above roughly a fifth of exports. This is the master KPI because it is simultaneously the growth engine and the regulatory exposure. Deye's history contains one clean case study of what happens when a single market becomes too large a share and then reverses. Europe's rise from a minor contributor to nearly half of group revenue in under three years is the same pattern running again, with an added political variable South Africa never had.2

2. Segment gross margin, split between storage inverters and battery packs. The inverter margin is the ballast; the battery margin is the direction of travel. Two questions resolve the mix debate: does the storage inverter line hold above the 50% level it currently occupies as peers add capacity, and does the battery pack line stabilise or continue eroding from the low thirties? The consolidated number will obscure both, so the segment split is the one to read.714

3. Working capital: receivable days, inventory days, and the third-party settlement share. These are the earliest available signals of channel stress, and Deye's own 2023 experience shows they move before revenue does. Inventory building faster than sales in a distributor-led export model is the specific tell that preceded the last downturn.263

Deliberately excluded from this list: headline revenue growth, which in this business is a lagging indicator of decisions made twelve months earlier, and market share, which Deye currently leads and which tells you where the company has been rather than where its economics are going.

XI. Outro & Key Takeaways

There is a particular kind of company that Western investors systematically misprice, and Deye is a clean specimen. It has no proprietary chemistry, no software platform, no brand a consumer would pay up for, and no technology a competent rival cannot replicate within about a year. What it has is thirty-five years of accumulated manufacturing depth, an unusual willingness to build products for customers other people found unattractive, and a founder who at 64 decided to enter an industry he had never worked in.

The core lesson is that industrial agility compounds in places that look boring from the outside. Molds taught Deye tolerance and cost. Heat exchangers taught it how to survive a customer who demands a lower price every year. Dehumidifiers taught it how to speak to an end user and run a channel. Variable-frequency control boards handed it the physics of power conversion. None of those businesses was exciting, and none would have justified a growth multiple. Together they constituted almost everything required to build a world-leading storage inverter — which is why the pivot, when it came, took eighteen months rather than a decade.

The second lesson is more cautionary, and it is the one this record most strongly supports. Deye did not win by being better; it won by being elsewhere. It found markets where the alternative to its product was darkness, and in those markets it earned German gross margins from middle-income customers. That was a genuine insight and it produced a genuine fortune. But an advantage that derives from where you sell rather than what you sell has a shelf life set by other people's decisions — a utility that repairs itself, a competitor that follows you in, or a regulator that decides your cloud connection is a national security question. Deye has already lived through the first two. The third is happening now, in its largest market, in real time.

So the open question at the end of this story is not whether Deye can build the box. It demonstrably can, at a cost almost nobody else can match. The question is whether a company built to find the next country in crisis can convert that skill into something more durable — an owned channel, a service franchise, a commercial and industrial business with real switching costs — before the arbitrage that funded it runs out.

Deye did not defeat Enphase and SolarEdge by building a better microinverter for a roof in California. It won by building an affordable, generator-friendly, low-voltage power system for houses in Johannesburg, Lahore, and São Paulo, in the hours when the lights actually go out. Whether that is a business model or a very well-executed trade is the thing an investor is really underwriting.
