The business commands an enviable monopoly as the exclusive assembler of China's carrier-based fighters and heavy multirole strike aircraft for the 中国人民解放军空军 PLAAF (People's Liberation Army Air Force). Yet its 2025 annual report explicitly notes that it cannot disclose "model, capacity, orders, plans, prices, revenue, cost, profit, technical or R&D data" for its main products, because those are state secrets.2 In place of figures, the annual report's production and sales volume table lists a single character: 略 — "omitted."2

Economically, its profile aligns closer to a high-volume contract manufacturer than a proprietary technology owner: it relies on high top-line revenue, modest percentage margins, and substantial working capital, generating value through yield optimization, cycle-time reduction, and defect control rather than original design breakthroughs.
This structure illustrates why management focuses so heavily on industrial scaling and cost management, as operational efficiency and capacity expansion represent the primary levers within executive control.
The R&D tell
Research and development figures further reinforce this division. In 2025, the company reported R&D expenditures of ¥1.10 billion—representing 2.46% of total revenue—with none of the amount capitalized.2 For an enterprise building advanced stealth aircraft, this intensity figure appears modest compared to global peers. The modest ratio reflects the structural division established in the 1960s: platform design remains the domain of the 601 Institute, an independent research entity outside the corporate perimeter. The buyer
There is one primary domestic customer: the 中国人民解放军 PLA, purchasing through its equipment development apparatus. The annual report describes the model plainly: the company plans production against models and procurement plans "determined by specific users based on national defence strategic requirements," sells direct with no distribution layer, and sets prices "in accordance with relevant state regulations on military product pricing and procurement."2 Product volumes and prices, it adds, are "little affected by fluctuations in market supply and demand."2
A monopsony of that kind often depresses supplier economics, as the sole buyer dictates volume, timing, and price while capturing the financial surplus. Here, that leverage is partially offset by two factors.
