I don't understand why my own loving daughter would do this."[^13] The eldest son, ์กฐํ์ Cho Hyun-sik, who held 19.32%, backed his sister, arguing the chairman's health should be assessed by experts.[^13] The younger daughter, ์กฐํฌ์ Cho Hee-won, held 10.82%.[^13]
That is the family. Four siblings, one succession, and a father who chose.
The chairman. Cho Hyun-bum is the second son, and his career has been shaped by two forces: proximity to the founding family and repeated collisions with the courts. He has been at the centre of the group's strategy for a decade, and the Hanon acquisition is unmistakably his โ the group described its completion as the realisation of his decade-long vision.5 Colleagues and coverage describe a leader who moves fast and centralises decisions; the Technoring opening in 2022 gave a glimpse of how he talks about the business โ "Tires, being the only media in a vehicle that makes contact with the road surface, are the key to maximizing vehicle performance."22
He was also arrested in May 2023 on charges of embezzlement and breach of trust, released on bail later that year, re-arrested in May 2025 after a district court sentenced him to three years, and saw that reduced to two years on appeal in December 2025.4 On May 8, 2026, the Supreme Court upheld the two-year term, dismissing appeals from both Cho and the prosecution.4
The details of the conviction are worth stating precisely, because they are frequently exaggerated in both directions. Prosecutors alleged misappropriation of roughly โฉ20 billion. So there is a professional management layer, and it demonstrably kept the business running through the chairman's incarceration โ the record quarter delivered in his absence is the evidence. But note what did not change: Cho resigned an executive title, not control.
