The qualification cycle alone creates enormous switching costs. Getting an MLCC qualified for a specific automotive platform takes years of testing and validation. Once a supplier is designed into a vehicle's safety-critical systems, replacing them is extraordinarily difficult. The automaker would need to re-qualify the replacement part through the same multi-year process, with all the engineering resources and schedule risk that implies.
